Stellenbosch Birds
The Stellenbosch Birdclub is no more, but this site lives on as a special site by Rosie Breuer books, publisher of special editions. For interesting outings I recommend to join Cape Birdclub or Somerset West Birdclub
BirdLife South Africa strives to conserve birds and their habitats. We work with people to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources. We are a registered non-profit, public benefit environmental organization and the only dedicated bird-conservation organisation in South Africa. We have 6 100 members in 40 bird clubs throughout South Africa.
South Africa offers a range of birding habitats, from grasslands, wetlands and forests, to savannahs, fynbos, the seashore and open oceans. Bird-watching in South Africa allows birders to explore a diverse range of habitats. These habitats offer a spectacular diversity of beautiful birds, from the diminutive, fynbos-restricted Orange-breasted Sunbird to the large, desert-adapted Ludwig's Bustard. A remarkable 841 bird species are found in South Africa, about eight percent of the world's bird species. Seventy-four species are endemic to South Africa, i.e. they do not occur naturally anywhere else in the world.
The Barberton Bird Club was formed in September 2001 after a year-long bird survey had been conducted by two knowledgeable resident birders and ± 20 interested members of the community. The Club is a satellite branch of BirdLife Lowveld, which is a full branch of BirdLife South Africa, the national bird club with international ties.
The Lakes Bird Club opened in Sedgefield with an inaugural meeting on 12th February 1988. 36 birders formed the foundation members and 4 were granted honorary status. The annual membership subscription payable was R5. Initially an affiliate of the Cape Bird Club, they donated R200 to enable the "fledgling to get airborne". Later, after being an affiliate of Birdlife South Africa, the Lakes Bird Club was ratified as a full Branch in 2007.
Cape Town Bird Watching at Rondekuil
Bird-watching at Rondekuil is very rewarding. The trees and reeds along the Diep River, which runs along the northern boundary of the farm, provide an excellent habitat for many bird species. The reed-filled dam, landscaped gardens at Leeulaagte Cottages and gardens surrounding De Rondawel and the main Farm House are also home to many varieties of birds. Rondekuil is prime birding territory.
The Barn Swallow European Swallow) is not an endangered species. In fact it is currently plentiful. Why then does this little bird receive so much attention?
It is because of its extraordinary lifestyle - a lifestyle that takes it across the Globe and which brings it in close contact with humans.
I believe that BirdLife South Africa is currently going from strength to strength, and this is largely due to the hard work and dedication of its staff, its volunteers and its members.BirdLife South Africa's focus has changed and our main goal is now bird conservation, especially through the conservation of threatened species and the protection of Important Bird Areas.A lot has been achieved during recent months, but there's a lot to do.

Tygerberg Bird Club Silver Jubilee Celebration
The Tygerberg Bird Club celebrated its 25th birthday on Friday 15 April at its monthly meeting at the Kristo Pienaar Environmental Education Centre in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve, Bellville.Messages of congratulations and good wishes were received from long-standing members who could not attend, from our neighbours, namely the Cape Bird Club, and also from the Western Cape Birding Forum. Two sentiments were noted in all of the messages and these touched on the expertise within the club, but especially the vibrant and friendly nature of the members.
The Pietersburg Bird Club as it was then known was born in the mid 1970s and then unfortunately died a premature death in 1987, mainly as a result of the coincidental relocation of some of the key committee members. During these initial years the club was instrumental in turning a portion of the Citys water purification works into a world-class bird sanctuary
